Habitat Destruction

Destruction of habitats threatens species and entire ecosystems

Endangered Species

Endangered species are a group of any species at risk of being wiped out because of extinction due to an exponential decrease in its population. In the past, it was known as any species in trouble or threatened by extinction. There are different levels of risk that the animals can be at so before making a decision about the case of the species it must be analyzed by a special categorization system. Many times the group who complete the analysis is linked to the national legislature, for America that would be the United States Endangered Species Act. It causes problems such as “Habitat loss and degradation, Spread of introduced species which negatively affect the ecosystem, Global warming & Chemical Pollution, Unsustainable Hunting and Disease” Also Humans have taken over land which was for animals for causes like infrastructure development which leaves animals without homes. Global warming has also caused a threat for species such as the polar bear due to their habitats being affected. Mining has been another threat to species including gorillas because their food resources are not easily available anymore and humans have also begun killing gorillas for their meat. Many species of birds are at risk as a result of habitat destruction sometimes caused by snakes or other wild animals and also humans. Aquatic animals such as sharks have been getting attacked because of a need of humans for the meat and fins of such animals and finally, Freshwater habitats are also in trouble because of pollution from locations like farms, housing, and big corporations.

What is Destruction?

Destruction is the action or process of causing so much damage to something that no longer exists or cannot be repaired. There are many different types of destruction. It can be caused by humans, animals, and even plants. In this case, destruction could be used to remove or damage the habitat of a living thing, and/or prevent it from future species living there. Destruction could also mean the action or process of killing or being killed.

Forms of Destruction.

Deforestation

The removal of trees in an area for either the land or the lumber.

Desertification

The general degradation of land quality. Desertification features low biodiversity, dry conditions, and poor soil health, which forms deserts.

Example of Deforestation

South America

The Amazon Rainforest is the largest rainforest on the planet. Over 16,000 tree species and 2.5 million bug species call it home. However, it is not immune to destruction. Humans have been cutting down trees in the Amazon to create space for cattle ranches.

Overpopulation

Global

Dating back to 1000 BC the population in the world was only around 50 million people which is only a small portion of the population today. Today the world’s population is around 7.8 billion people and estimated to reach 8 billion between 2023 and 2026. Overpopulation can certainly cause problems in the future because the population is rapidly growing, much faster than how the earth is evolving. Later on, the earth could possibly be more crowded than the planet can handle and eventually lead to a fight between resources.

Example of Desertification

North America

The 1930's was a very problematic time. This era featured the Great Depression, The Hoover Dam, and the creation of the Dust bowl era. The Dust Bowl was the result of desertification, where people we over-farming and among other poor agricultural practices, as well as droughts which frequently plagued the land.
